Entering the city from the west in 1853, horses pulled canal boats along the towpath near today’s Main Street into the center of the business district, a route that remained the same for almost one hundred years.
Within a few years, motorized boats made deliveries to stores and businesses on docks like the one near old City Hall, stacked with barrels and kegs. See more information about this image

Early hotels were sometimes not much more than shacks that served travelers and workers. Later, sophisticated visitors and traveling salesmen enjoyed more elegant ones like the Osburn.
